Details of our February gathering; booking for a day trip to the Dungeness Sound Mirrors, and information on other happenings we’ll be part of in the coming months.
February Meetup
Thursday 8th February, upstairs at the Old King's Head. Please do RSVP using the link below.
After last month's shenanigans at our previous (brewery “managed) location, this will be our first gathering at the Old King's Head.
We have a big table booked upstairs. It’s an independent pub and the landlord and his team are friendly and helpful. We will know closer to the time if they’re doing food that night. If not, I’m told we’re allowed to receive deliveries.
Dungeness & the Sound Mirrors
On Saturday 13th July 02024 the RSPB are holding one of their occasional open days at the Denge Sound Mirrors.
A group of us are using this as the basis for a long-mooted day trip to Dungeness. The intention is for a walking tour of the area structured around this opportunity to visit the Sound Mirrors themselves.
If you want to join us, please book a ticket ASAP using the link below. We expect this to sell out well in advance.
Further details of our plans will be in following newsletters but please book now if you want to be sure of ticket.
Thanks to Rina for spotting this.
Other Events
In chronological order, here are some events that some group members will be attending in the coming weeks and months. If you decide you want to go too, please do reply to this email and I'll put you in touch with people.
Thursday 1st February
Chinese New Year Lates at the Science Museum
Purely by chance, it seems, the Science Museum are holding their Chinese New Year ‘Lates’ event on the night of Imbolc. Seems like an intriguing (albeit probably unwitting) piece of programming.
Monday 5th February
Note Change at the John Cage Organ Project
ORGAN2/ASLSP is a Long-Term Art Project in Halberstadt, Germany. There is some information in English here. If you are thinking of going, contact the foundation here or reply to this email and I'll put you in touch. After this, the next note change is not until around 02030.
14th February to 6th May
Edward Burtynsky at the Saatchi Gallery
Burtynsky is a Long Now collaborator and gave a SALT talk in San Francisco in 02008. A group trip feels in order.
Friday 16th & Saturday 17th February
The Anthropocene Trilogy at the BFI
Timed to match the opening of the Burtynsky exhibition above. I have booked for both Friday night screenings (Row K). All welcome. The trilogy will apparently be coming to the BFI IMAX in April.
Monday 26th OR Tuesday 27th February
The Thin Veil of London by Minimum Labyrinth
Robert Kingham of Minimum Labyrinth is kindly arranging one of his “Thin Veil of London” tours for us on either of the above dates. Once the date is locked in, we will let people know via this newsletter. If you’d like to know more, you can ask him in the pub at our next meetup.
Thursday 21st March
Richard Fisher at UCL
Our very own Richard Fisher will be speaking at UCL to mark the publication of "The Long View" in paperback.
Thursday 11th & Friday 12th April
British Museum Palaeolithic-Mesolithic Conference 2024
A well-priced two-day public conference at the British Museum. The programme can be downloaded here.
If there's an event or anything else that you'd like to draw to the attention of the group, please do reply to this email with any useful details. We will aim to share links once per month.
It’s particularly great to have seen a flurry of subscriptions from people who hadn’t been to a meetup in a while.
